Mystical Shangri-la - "The Lost Horizon" Shangri-La, or "Gyalthang" in Tibetan, means "The Sun & Moon of the Heart" or " Xin Zhong De Ri Yue". The word ‘Shangri-la’ was popularized by James Hilton’s 1933 novel, The Lost Horizon. In it, survivors of a plane crash found themselves in a beautiful and otherworldly place occupied by a mysterious and placid people whose lives are dedicated to contemplation and the search for wisdom.

Where is this paradise that has captured the imagination of many? It is widely believed to be in the region around Eastern Tibet stretching into present-day Yunnan and Sichuan provinces (see map) . In May 2002 Zhongdian or Gyalthang, a Tibetan town in the north-western part of Yunnan Province, was officially awarded the name Shangri-la. Here colorful Tibetan villages, lamaseries and stupas are set amidst a sublime landscape of pristine snow-capped peaks and lush greeneries. Cattle graze leisurely in vast meadows under the beautiful blue skies, exotic flowers and luxuriant grass sway to the gentle breeze and rare birds and animals make their homes in the depths of virgin forests. Up till today, this mystical and bewitching region remains a paradise to travelers.
