A classic scenario for developing a high altitude illness is fly from Chengdu to Lhasa (3,650m). You begin to have a severe headache and feel nauseous and weak. If your condition worsens, you may begin to have difficulty walking. Scenarios like this are not uncommon, so it’s essential that you understand the physiological effects of high altitude.

Given time, your body can adapt to the changes at a specific altitude and it generally takes 1-3 days at that altitude. So it is important that upon arrival at Lhasa from your flight, you do not over-exert yourself or move higher for the first 24 hours. Take it easy. Light activity during the day is better than sleeping because respiration decreases during sleep, exacerbating the symptoms.
