Health Advice For travelers To Tibet:
There are inherent risks in traveling at high altitude. When going to altitude it is your responsibility to learn the latest information and understand the risks. A classic scenario for developing a high altitude illness is fly from Chengdu to Lhasa (3,650m). You begin to have a severe headache and feel nauseous and weak. If your condition worsens, you may begin to have difficulty walking. Scenarios like this are not uncommon, so it’s essential that you understand the physiological effects of high altitude.
Given time, your body can adapt to the changes at a specific altitude and it generally takes 1-3 days at that altitude. So it is important that upon arrival at Lhasa from your flight, you do not over-exert yourself or move higher for the first 24 hours. Take it easy. Light activity during the day is better than sleeping because respiration decreases during sleep, exacerbating the symptoms. Stay properly hydrated, avoid tobacco, alcohol and other depressant drugs including, barbiturates, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills.
It is recommended that all travellers should have themselves medically checked before attempting any high altitude trip. If you have a history of suffering from the following ailments, it is highly recommended that you should refrain from travelling to a high altitude.
Hypertension, Arthritis, Heart Disease, Severe Anemia, Peptic Ulcers, Epileptic Fits, Obesity (overweight). Chronic Asthma, Muscular Cramps, Hepatitis (Jaundice); or any other disease, which may hamper the trekker.
