Day 03: Explore around Leh

We spend a day allowing our bodies to adapt to the high-altitude and soak in the local culture. There is plenty to keep you occupied. We visit some of the monasteries in and around Leh such as the Shey, Thiksey and Hemis. There is also the option of visiting the old Leh Palace and the Khardung La Pass (world’s highest motorable road at 5,600m/18,400ft). Leh also has a useful market and you could do some last-minute shopping and pick up some gear for the climb.

An easy day with a gradual ascent of about 2.5 to 3 hours to Matho La with many prayer flags fluttering. From here we descent steeply on a switchback trail to Juruley. A great chance to view wild mountain goats on this trail. Today is also the day when you get your first views of Stok Kangri peak.

Day 07: Trek to Stok Kangri Base Camp (4975m) 3 – 4 hrs

We are now on the trail connecting the Stok village to the base camp. The base camp is a short walk from here but we do gain a substantial altitude. Depending on how the team has acclimatized we can head for a short acclimatization walk above base camp.
