Hakuba Valley ~ Happo Ike Trek

Happo Pond is a glittering gem nestled high in the Northern Japanese Alps. On a clear day, the pond reflects the near-3,000m peaks of the Hakuba Sanzan mountains in its waters. Despite its lofty location, the pond is a brisk 90-minute, 1.5km hike from the highest chair lift. The trail follows the ridgeline, offering picture-perfect vistas of the Alps as well as the Hakuba Valley down below. Along the way is a treasure trove of wildflowers.

Adventurous (and properly prepared) climbers can proceed from here up to 2,696m Mt. Karamatsu. On the other hand, those who don’t want to break a sweat can enjoy the panoramic view from Happo-ike Sanso, the lodge at the top of the chair lift. The Usagidaira Terrace at the top of the Adam Gondola also offers great views, coffee, and light meals as well.

Enjoy the awesome scenery of the Japanese Alps in the Hakuba Valley.

Day 3 Half day Kayak tour at Aoki Lake [B/-/D]
After breakfast, transfer to Kayak Centre for 1/2 day kayak at Aoki Lake – a deep and clear lake fed by snow-melt, rain, and mineral springs from below. In the Summer the lake is alive with greenery, birds and fish and is beautiful for swimming, and fireflies are plentiful in the evenings. In Autumn the color of the leaves is one of Japan’s treasures. Paddle a single kayak around this beautiful lake…take it slow and enjoy the views with the local guide.

After a safety briefing, your guide will instruct you in proper paddling technique and how to sit in and move around in the canoe. As you explore the lake, your guide will point out wildlife and points of interest. Stop for a drink, a snack, explore and swim if the weather allows, before making your way back to Kayak Centre.

Transfer back to hotel for washup and rest of day is free at leisure.
