Nong Khiaw is easily accessible from Luang Prabang but still remains the remote, stunning, mountainous landscape many travelers are looking for. This 6-day tour has been designed to take you on the most scenic trails, to the best homestays, and up and down the Nam Ou River by boat as you experience total immersion in the beauty of Nong Khiaw. We’ve designed the tour to include mixed nights in basic homestays for incredible cultural experiences and comfortable guest houses where you can refresh with some modern comforts to re-energize for more jungle hikes well off the beaten path.

Day 1: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw Waterfall Trek and Hmong Village Homestay (L, D)
Meet your guide in Luang Prabang and enjoy a scenic 3-hours drive winding along the Nam Ou River to the trail head of the trek.
Today’s hike will take you up along a cascading waterfall passing through a pristine jungle of ferns and large trees. Bring some shoes or sandals that can get wet as we hike our way up and through the waterfall.
At the top of the waterfall, the trail flattens and passes through agricultural land on the final stretch to a large and remote Hmong village for an unforgettable homestay. Lunch will be along the way and dinner in the village.

Trek: About 7 Km medium grade, about 3-4 hours.
Day 2: Remote Trekking and Mountain Village Homestay (B, L, D)
Enjoy breakfast, bid your farewells and begin a hike through valleys and mountains covered with rice paddies and jungle.
We’ll arrive mid-afternoon at a small Hmong village nestled into the side of a mountain and homestay in a very simple house with a family who has made their living there for years. A short walk up the mountain and you can visit a village with one of the most spectacular views in the area overlooking countless mountain peaks.
Spend the night with a friendly family for an authentic, welcoming, and unforgettable homestay.

Trek: 11 km of medium hiking, about 5 hours.
Day 3: Mountain Descent to Nong Khiaw – Overnight in Nong Khiaw Riverside Lodge (B, L)
Today we’ll hike to the Nong Khiaw Valley from our mountaintop homestay. The hike is only 2.5-3 hours and you’ll want to take it slow to take pictures and to enjoy the spectacular morning views.
Transfer to Nong Khiaw center and check into the beautiful Nong Khiaw Riverside Lodge for a night of comfort after “roughing it”. You’ll have time to explore the small town of Nong Khiaw, visit Phatok Cave with your guide for some interesting natural and historical attractions, and relax in the comfort of a riverside lodge. Your evening is free to yourself.

Day 4: The Famous 100 Waterfall Trek and Khmu Riverside Village Homestay (B, L, D)
Enjoy a delicious breakfast and grab your bags to set off again into the nature of Laos. Today we start off with a long-tail boat ride down the Nam Ou River. About an hour on the water and we arrive at a small Khmu village on the riverbank where we will spend the night. Drop your bags so you can travel light and set off on the 100 Waterfall Trek.
Hike back to the Nam Ou River for boat transfer to Ban Houay Goong, a traditional Khmu village in a stunning setting on the riverbanks where you will spend an overnight homestay.

Day 5: Nam Ou River and Muang Ngoi Explorer (B, L)
Following breakfast we’ll board a local boat headed upriver on the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi about 2 hours with a boat change in Nong Khiaw.
Once in Muang Ngoi, check into the lovely Rattanavongsa Guest House and explore Muang Ngoi with an afternoon walk to Tam Gang Cave and Ban Naa village.
Muang Ngoi is known for its remoteness and panoramic mountain scenery. You’ll have time to relax and explore the small town on your own and take in the scenery at your leisure for the evening.

Day 6: Muang Ngoi to Luang Prabang and Visit Pak Ou Cave (B, L)
After our breakfast we take a return boat from Muang Ngoi to Nong Khiaw and then a private minivan through beautiful mountain and river landscape to Luang Prabang. We’ll make a stop to visit the famous Pak Ou Cave and the “Whiskey Village”.
We’ll take lunch at a restaurant with a fantastic view of the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers and the Pak Ou Caves. Arrive in Luang Prabang late afternoon for the conclusion of this unforgettable adventure tour from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and back!

Preparation
Preparation
- Bring only the gear and clothing necessary for the tour. You may leave your extra luggage and valuables in our partner main office before the tour. Your guide will help you on the morning of the tour.
- Bring shoes that can get wet and extra sandals for wearing in the evenings. The 100 Waterfall is technical trekking.
- Pack light as we’re carrying the gear. You’ll want clothes suitable for all activities and appropriate for the predicted weather.
