Booking Deadline: July 30, 2018

Day 1  Ulaanbaatar (D) O/N Hotel

Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar (UB) you will be met by your guide and transferred to a hotel in the city center. Time permitting you may consider taking a guided tour to some of the city’s highlights, including a giant Buddha statue at Mongolia’s main Buddhist center, the National museum and the central square. A throat singing and contortion performance is also worth attending. At a welcome dinner you will be given an informal introduction to the tour ahead of you.

Day 2  Gorkhi-Terelj National Park Trek (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

In just an hour’s driving distance from UB there lies the Terelj NP, the most easily accessible part of the nearly 2mln hectare Khan Khenty strictly protected area. Terelj, meaning rhododendron is just a tiny but nevertheless a spectacular part of it, a fantastic venue for hiking. You will find yourself in a wide mountain bowl dotted with rock formations of weird shapes, quite often named after things they resemble. Upon arrival we hike to see 2 iconic landmarks of the park, the Turtle Rock and the Aryapala, a charming Buddhist temple on a cliff top. We spend the night in a guest resort with spectacular rock formations as the backdrop. You will be accommodated in traditional felt covered tents, also known as ger or yurt. Although sanitary facilities are located separately, the kind of accommodation provides most of the comforts of a conventional hotel. Throughout the journey you will stay in such camps.

Day 3  Visit Genghis Khan statue and hike in the “Mongolia in XIII century” theme park (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

After breakfast we visit a giant mounted statue of Genghis Khan. The creator of the vastest empire ever known is depicted looking in the direction of his birth place and resting his right hand on a golden whip he found here as legend suggests. From an observation deck on the horses head enjoy panoramic views over the vast steppe and rolling hills. Then transfer to a historical theme park called “XIII century Mongolia”. As the names suggests it consists of several encampments dedicated to displaying different aspects of medieval Mongolian life: postal station, craftsmen village, library, herders camp, shaman’s place and Khan’s camp with a huge ornate ger. Each place is arranged in the medieval style with near-real costumes and implements on display. A comprehensive narration by your guide will enliven your experience. You can get your photographs taken wearing the costumes, try your hands on different tools, get your name printed in traditional writing and test your marksmanship. The camps are 1km apart from each other so we leisurely stroll from one to the other. We then drive to Gun Galuut Nature Reserve for dinner and overnight.

Day 4  Wildlife watching hikes in Gungaluut Nature Reserve (NR) (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

Literally meaning “deep and with lots of geese” the NR is comprised of a few small lakes, nesting ground for Whooper Swans, Swan Geese as well as a number of waders. Rare birds such as Stejneger’s White-winged Scoters, Garganey, White-naped Cranes can also be spotted here. We spend the day hiking with a purpose of watching these birds and spotting wild mountain sheep, the Argali. Sighting Argali will require a bit of patience, tracking and waiting. We spend the night in a ger resort located near Kherlen, one of the largest Mongolian rivers.

Day 5  Mt. Bogd National Park (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

Transfer to Mt. Bogd National Park. We travel across arid mountainous steppes that form the northern fringes of the Gobi desert and drive to Bogd Khan NP just outside of UB.

Day 6  Hike to summit of Bogd Khan mountain (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

This morning we take a short transfer to ruins of Manzushir Monastery on the edge of Bogd Khan NP. From there we take a 5-6 hr return hike to the highest point of the Bogd Khan mountain massif. A well marked trail takes us through mixed forests and lush highland vegetation to 2256m Tsetsee Gun peak, strewn with granite formations and Buddhist shrines. While having lunch you can enjoy distant views of Siberian wooded mountains in the north and rugged outlines of the Gobi desert in the south. Back to the mountain base we visit the remains of the monastery complex which was originally built in 1733. It was levelled to the ground during anti-religion campaigns of 1930-ies with just the main temple remaining to these days. Apart from it we will see a few sections of shattered walls, foundations, stone terraces and some stone niches in the cliffs and hear its story told by your guide. We then take a 2 hr drive to Khustai NP.

Day 7  Wildlife watching hike at Khustai National Park (BLD) O/N Ger Camp

In 1993 a small number of last remaining wild horses was brought to the Khustai NP from several European zoos and re-introduced to their historical homeland. Also known as “Przewalski horses” they had gone extinct by 1950-ies. Today over 350 wild horses, all native to Mongolia, roam the park’s mountains and valleys having to withstand predators and harsh climate. Sizable populations of red deer, Mongolian gazelles and wild mountain sheep have also found a refuge in the park and can be spotted with a bit more luck. Today accompanied by a ranger who will guide and share his knowledge about the local wildlife we hike in the park and watch wildlife. In the afternoon we visit an ancient worship site constructed by the Turks, people who ruled most of Asia between 6-8 centuries AD. After hearing an interesting narration of your guide we return to the ger camp for dinner and your last night in gers.

Day 8  Return to UB (BD) O/N Hotel

Wake up listening to the sounds of awakening nature and have breakfast before taking a 2 hr return transfer to UB. Upon returning to UB transfer to your hotel with some time left for possible shopping and additional visits. Goodbye dinner in the evening.

Day 9  Departure (B)

Today you will be transferred to airport for your flight home.
