Sikkim, one of the tiniest states in India but is definitely a prized Jewel. This is the home of the Khangchendzonga and many other holy mountains ranging from 5000 to 7000m+. Although a lot of people visit Sikkim to view its snow mammoths, but what is also thoroughly enjoyed is the dense jungles filled with such diversity along the way. The Barsey Rhododendron sanctuary is a large forest that covers some 10 sq.km area home to several species of Rhododendron, Primula, Magnolia, Oaks and Pine. It lies at an altitude range of 2200 to 4100m and supports an amazing variety of bio-diversity. Walking through the sanctuary, one can encounter various kinds of forests: Sub-Tropical Forests, Mixed Broad leaf Forests, Conifer Forests and Alpine Meadows. Hundred of bird species make this sanctuary their home. This is also the habitat of the red panda, which is a threatened species. This is a great small trip for people looking to just enjoy their time in the outdoors with some awesome forest topped with some stunning Himalayan scenery.

Day 01: Arrive Bagdogra. Drive to Pelling (2100m) (6 to 7 hrs)
Day 02: Drive Pelling to Uttarey (1850m) (1 hr). Trek to Chitre(2610m) (3 to 4 Hrs)
Day 03: Trek Chitre to Kalijhar (3400m) (2.5 to 3 Hrs). Excursion to Phoktey Dara (3500m)
Day 04: Trek Kalijhar to Achalay (3 to 4 Hrs)
Day 05: Trek Achalay to Deoningali Dhap (2800m) (4 to 5 Hrs)
Day 06: Trek Thulo Dhap to Barsey (2750m) (4 to 5 Hrs)
Day 07: Trek Barsey to Hilley (2600m) (2 to 3 Hrs). Drive to Kalimpong (5-6 Hrs)
Day 08: Drive Kalimpong to Bagdogra (3.5 hrs)

 

08 Days Sikkim Rhododendron Trek

Day 01: Arrive Bagdogra. Drive to Pelling (2100m) (6 to 7 hrs)
After you arrive in Bagdogra you will be received by our representative who will drive you to Pelling, the home of Pemayangtse – one of the oldest and premier monasteries in Sikkim. The drive is long and bumpy in a few sections but the scenery is very pleasant and scenic all along the way. We stop for lunch and tea on the way during the drive and will reach Pelling by late evening. It is good to book flights landing at Bagdogra before 12 noon to facilitate the onward drive to Pelling.
Overnight at Pelling Hotel.

Day 02: Drive Pelling to Uttarey (1850m) (1 hr). Trek to Chitre(2610m) (3 to 4 Hrs)
Today, after an early morning breakfast, visit the famous Pemayangtse Monastery and later drive to Uttare. Pelling is a great place to view the Khangchendzonga and Kabru Ranges and it is always a pleasant sight in the morning. Uttarey is an hour away from here and we cross the Singshore bridge, the 2nd highest Bridge in Asia. From Uttarey, the walk to Chitre is through a dense forest of Rhododendron, Oaks, and a great variety of trees. Distinctly visible are the Orchids growing on many trees. At the end of the trek we reach a big clearing where the Indian soldiers SSB Unit camps. We camp just above it for the night.

Day 03: Trek Chitre to Kalijhar (3400m) (2.5 to 3 Hrs). Excursion to Phoktey Dara (3500m)
We walk straight up on a steep ascent to Chiwabhanjhang, where another unit of the army camps. From Chiwabhanjhang we turn left and proceed on the Singalila Ridge to Kalijhar, just below Phoktey Dara.

Today is a short walk, but after lunch we go up on a little excursion to the highpoint at Phoktey Dara. On a clear day you can see the whole Khangchendzonga and Everest Ranges from here. It is one of the most beautiful sights in these parts.

Day 04: Trek Kalijhar to Achalay (3 to 4 Hrs)
We can try an early morning walk up to Phoktey Dara to catch another glimpse of the peaks and descend for breakfast. After breakfast we trek to Achalay through dense Jungles again. At Achalay there is a small peak which serves as a great vantage point for viewing the big peaks. Sometimes this campsite has scarcity of water in which case we move further 45 mins to a camp at Joributey.

Day 05: Trek Achalay to Deoningali Dhap (2800m) (4 to 5 Hrs)
Today, the stretch is dotted with a lot of white Rhododendrons and the trail leads to beautiful clearings in the forest now and then from where we get an awesome panoramic view of the mountains all around. Deoningali Dhap is one of the most beautiful campsites on this route and is famous for a special species of Bamboo called “Deoningali” which is used by the locals to weave stuff for domestic use. It is believed to be the natural habitat of the Wild Boar.

Day 06: Trek Deoningali Dhap to Barsey (2750m) (4 to 5 Hrs)
This is a lovely walk through dense forests with the huge tree trunks covered with heavy Moss and Orchids hanging from everywhere. The trail sometimes opens up to sprawling vistas of rhododendron dotted Valleys beneath.

Day 07: Trek Barsey to Hilley (2600m) (2 to 3 Hrs). Drive to Kalimpong (5 -6 Hrs)
The last day of the trek is short and is pretty famous as a day hike for people visiting Hilley. There are lodges at both Hilley and Barshey that make it a popular option for trekkers who don’t prefer camping. Drive to Kalimpong, a town famous for its orchid nurseries. We spend the evening loafing around the small town and have dinner at the hotel.

Day 08: Drive Kalimpong to Bagdogra (3.5 hrs)
We start early from Kalimpong and drive to Bagdogra Airport which is about 2.5 to 3 hours away. On the way we stop for lunch for about half an hour before proceeding on. Trip Ends.
